Grating Platform Removal/Installation

Last modification: December 10, 2007

1. Components that need to be in place prior to installation of the grating.

  1. Prism must be installed.
  2. Grating Cell and platform assembly fully assembled, but without the coarse motor hardware.
  3. Piezo wires need to be tucked into platform with tape or something holding them in so they don’t get crushed.
  4. Make sure tip/tilt hardware is secure so there is no shifting during transportation or operation
  5. Make sure grating cell cover is in place.
  6. Make sure that all of the gravity pads are applied to the grating.
  7. Spaceframe MUST be lowered at least 6 inches to allow passage of grating platform inside the weldment. Blue flexure mounts must be removed to allow platform to fit.
  8. Apex attachment clip fittings in place on the grating end, not in place on the prism end.

2. HARDWARE READY TO GO
  1. Clips to attach platform to apex fittings, with all associated hardware/washers etc.
  2. Spacers to attach between clips and platform. Attach spacers to clips and tighten securely to appropriate standard screw torque.
  3. Grating Motor, not attached to platform.
  4. 2 ¼ inch 8-32 screws must be used between clip and apex fitting. Screws on the prism end are modified to prevent bottoming out.
  5. Hex drivers to fit SHCS 8-32 and 10-32.

3. LOWER THE SPACEFRAME
  1. One at a time remove bolts/washers from the attachments between the spaceframe and the weldment.
  2. Install allthread to the bolt location until no longer able to thread in. Tighten a bolt against the interface to lock the allthread in position.
  3. Install a washer and nut below the blue mounting flange, and tighten till snug, but not so that you are lifting the attachment.
  4. Slowly lower all bolts evenly, approximately ½ turn at a time, until the Spaceframe is lowered a minimum of 6 inches. This process goes much faster if you have at least 2-4 people.

4. INSTALLATION

  1. Lift grating onto chairs
  2. Remove the allthread and blue fittings from the last two locations on the grating side, to allow for more room for installation of the grating.
  3. Attach straps so that one strap fits under the grating platform on the prism side, and one strap fits under the grating platform on the grating side.
  4. lift grating so that it is angled at the approximate angle of the space frame. Rotate the prism end out slightly away from the spaceframe to allow more adjustment room between the prism and the grating cell.
  5. Lift the grating end higher than the prism end, and clocked slightly towards the top prism end so that the grating cell clears the apex fitting/longeron on the grating end of the platform.
  6. Angle between apex fittings with grating end going in first, then prism end..
  7. Push the platform back towards the grating end, so that it is parallel to the spaceframe, and between the apex fittings on both ends.
  8. With the cell still angled vertically out from the spaceframe, but fit between the apex fittings, loosely attach the mounting clips to the apex fitting on the prism end. Have all hardware ready to attach.
  9. Slowly winch the platform, so that it is lined up with the clips, and hardware lines up.
  10. winch until screws can be attached through platform to the spacer assembly. Slowly tighten until grating fixed in place.
  11. Install the coarse motor assembly. Align flexures per drawing ########.

5. GOTCHAS

  1. WATCH THE PRISM. IT WILL BE VERY CLOSE TO THE GRATING WHEN IN THE PROPER POSITION. ONE PERSON MUST WATCH THIS INTERFACE WHILE WINCHING, AND LIFTING BETWEEN THE APEX FITTINGS, DO NOT BUMP.
  2. MAKE SURE THAT THE GRAVITY PADS ARE APPLIED, SINCE JARRING OF THE PLATFORM OCCURS.
  3. MUST HAVE THE PLATFORM AT AN ANGLE TO START INSTALL OR REMOVE, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BIND AGAINST THE APEX FITTINGS OR THE DIAGONALS.
