1. Translating from fits to MEF and back again:
In iraf,
  • mkmsc Makes MEF from flat format
  • mscsplit Splits MEF to separate images

2. IRAF based routines:

  • Data is taken in IRAF based environment, observers are familiar with it:
  • imred.echelle does most of what we want.
  • mtools
    • MIKE's spectra have tilted skylines.
    • Jack Baldwin has a description of how to deal with tilted skylines in iraf and reduce MIKE data generally: mtools, see LCO web page.
    • He also has a CR zapper.
3. MAKEE and descendants

  • HIRES data is reduced by MAKEE, by Tom Barlow
  • ESI reduction package

4. IDL based pipelines:

  • MIKE REDUX by Jason Prochaska and Scott Burles, see website
  • HIRES REDUX, by Jason Prochaska, see Keck HIRES web site

5. OTHER:

  • Rodger Thompson's IDL based software
  • UVES pipeline (black box; not adaptable)
  • "Bechraf"
6. ISSUES to deal with:

  • optimal sky subtraction strategy (very small slits)
  • tilted sky lines? use DEEP2 strategy for sky subtraction?
  • optimal extraction strategy
  • cosmic ray removal (Pieter van Dokkum laplacian edge finder? Rhoads? See Farrage and Pimblet 2005)
  • scattered light (interorder fit; model a la STIS)
  • th-ar line list; optimal wavelength calibration/rebinning scheme; well-culled list
  • novel flat-field w/ LEDs
  • strategies for very high s/n
  • splicing orders
  • velocity stability
  • measurement of spectral line shape -- with star v. lamp
